Senior UI/UX Designer, Layla Care
Introduction
Layla’s mission is to empower people to take control of their mental health. We use client-centric innovation to understand and address gaps in the ever-changing realities in mental health. Today, Layla is a service that facilitates personalized individual, couples, family, and group therapy directly to the public as well as in collaboration with partners in the broader healthcare sector.
Location
This is a remote-first position with expectation to work in the office (Liberty Village, Toronto) one day per week (currently on Thursdays). Candidates must be within commuting distance of Toronto.
About the Opportunity
Our tech team works collaboratively with clinicians, designers, and operators. Together, we are developing a platform enhancing the experience of patients, therapists, our team, and partners.
We are looking for a generalist UI/UX Designer who is passionate about making a positive impact within the community through thoughtful design, data analysis and strategic decision-making. This is the first full-time staff designer at Layla, and will play a crucial role in the development and enhancement of our health technology platform and in supporting our business operations and product roadmap. We have a dynamic team, and this is a tremendous opportunity to learn multiple platforms, projects and product lines. This role requires not just UI/UX prowess but also exceptional collaboration and communication skills.
Responsibilities
We follow a quarterly planning process, and agile work methodology. Every quarter we identify top priorities and organize the team against objectives with clear accountabilities while maintaining collaboration. You can expect your role to be varied and evolve over time, but generally include the following categories:
Core Platform Buildout
- Lead the design and implementation of user-centric web and mobile interfaces, ensuring a seamless user experience across all platforms.
- Create high-quality UI/UX mockups and prototypes in Figma, translating complex requirements into intuitive designs.
- Collaborate closely with product managers and operations teammates to conduct ongoing user discovery, gathering insights from clients, therapists, and partners to inform design decisions.
- Conduct internal and external user research and usability testing to understand user needs, gather insights, and iteratively improve designs.
- Working as an embedded and fully integrated pod member, work closely with developers to ensure design feasibility and effective implementation, bridging the gap between design and development. Acting as a liaison between stakeholders and developers to address questions or resolve roadblocks.
- Support product manager/product owner activities as needed. For example: participating in backlog grooming, sprint planning, and prioritizing features. Participating in writing or refining user stories and acceptance criteria
- Develop and maintain design systems, style guides, and reusable components to ensure scalability and consistency.
- Contribute to product strategy and roadmap, focusing on enhancing user satisfaction and meeting business objectives.
- Stay updated on the latest UI/UX trends, tools, and methodologies, incorporating innovative techniques into your workflow.
Support for General Design Needs
- Generally act as our in-house UI/UX expert company-wide
- Partner with the Outreach Team to create visually appealing designs for marketing campaigns, conferences, and events, including: Print and digital materials such as mental health handouts, brochures, conference displays, newsletters, etc
- Contribute to the website touchups & potential future redesign by improving the user experience and visual appeal of key pages and features
- Provide ad hoc design support for internal and external projects, ensuring brand consistency and quality across all deliverables

Requirements
Training & Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience as a UI/UX designer, preferably at start-ups or scale-ups
- Bachelor’s degree in Arts, Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field
- Proficient in Figma and other design tools for creating wireframes, mockups, and prototypes
- Demonstrated expertise in designing and delivering web and mobile interfaces, with a strong understanding of responsive design principles
- Experience conducting user research, usability testing, and iterating on designs based on user feedback and data
- Familiarity with design systems, style guides, and component-based design for scalable products
- Strong understanding of accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG) and best practices for inclusive design
- Proven ability to work in cross-functional teams, collaborating with product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to align design goals with business objectives.
- Experience building, shipping, and maintaining consumer-facing applications
- Prior experience designing for B2C and/or health and wellness products is a plus

Nice to have:
- Experience with tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, or similar design platforms
- Familiarity with front-end development concepts (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) to facilitate collaboration with developers
- Understanding/experience with compliance standards in healthcare such as PHIPA and PIPEDA in the context of user data privacy
Logistical requirements
- Access to private, quiet and confidential workspace that allows for the protection of confidential information and the avoidance of disruption. This is important for team collaboration as well as speaking to clients professionally and confidentially
- Access to a mobile phone and internet connection with sufficient bandwidth and connection speed. Company will provide a setup budget, computer as well as a set monthly budget to cover the use of personal devices for work

Salary Range: $100,000-$125,000 per year
